Everybody Is Not Blind

In his book, Lord, It Has Been One of Those Days, Bob Brown tells of a pastor who visited an elderly blind lady who was a member of his church.  It was during the Christmas season, and he noticed that the Christmas tree in her house was brightly decorated with lights and ornaments. He said to her, “Do you do this every year?”

“Yes,” she replied, “this is one of the big things I do.  I always look forward to it.  My nephew always goes out and gets a Christmas tree, then together we get the Christmas decorations and decorate the tree.”

The pastor thought to himself, A blind woman with a brightly lighted Christmas tree?

He then indicated to her that he did not want to be offensive, but he could not quite understand why a blind woman would want to have a brightly decorated tree and lights in the window.

The dear little lady tilted her head towards him and said, “Pastor, everybody is not blind.”   It is so easy sometimes to get caught up in our little bubble and forget about those who are around us.  Not everyone is in the same situation as we are.  Philippians 2:4 says, “Each of you should look not only to our own interests, but also to the interests of others.”  Christmas is more than just the things we wish for and hope to get and it definitely more than that big screen tv we want on the Black Friday sale.  We must never forget that Jesus came and gave of himself for everyone.  This Christmas remember to reach out to others and let them know that Jesus loves them and you love them too.  Let’s make this the best Christmas ever!               In December we are going to start our last sermon series of the year, “Christmas Traditions.”  I hope that you will come join us for this exciting series that will lead us to Christmas this year.  On December 16th, during our 10 a.m. service we will have our Christmas program, “Emoji Christmas.”  We will be using skits, songs and scripture to re-tell the Christmas story in a fun, new way.  Everyone has been working hard and I am looking forward to that service.                Please take some time and look at all great opportunities we have during the month of December.  There are all types of ways to get involved this December.  If you need more info or just want to talk about how to get more involved you can call me at the church.  Have a very Merry Christmas!
