10 Commandments

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five- and six-year-olds.  After explaining the commandment to honor thy father and thy mother,’ she asked, “Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?”

Without missing a beat, one boy (the oldest of a family of seven) answered, “Thou shalt not kill.”

The Moral of the Story Is

Mrs. Hilton, the kindergarten teacher, was suddenly taken ill and a replacement was hastily found.  The substitute teacher had a degree in computer science and was at a loss as to what to do with the children.  She decided to tell them stories.  And always, at the end of each story, she would say, “And the moral of that story is . . ..”  Hearing dozens of stories, the children had sat through dozens of morals.  In a few days, Mrs. Hilton recovered from her illness and returned to her class.  One of her students greeted her with a smile and said, “Teacher, I’m so glad you’re back.  I like you better than that other teacher.”  Mrs. Hilton was flattered by the child, but was curious.  “Why do you like me better than the other teacher?”  The child looked into the teacher’s eyes and said, “Because you don’t have any morals.”

Maker Fun Factory VBS 2017

Summer brings all types of word pictures to our minds.  We may think of beaches, vacations, travel, camps, etc.  When we think of summer we usually think of all the fun things we can do with our family and friends.  But for me, the highlight of my summer is VBS.  I am so looking forward to this year’s VBS!  This year our theme is Maker Fun Factory.

Paid in Full with One Glass of Milk

When Jesus was asked, what is the greatest commandment, his reply was love God and the second was like the first, love man.  This is our mandate as Christians, but if there are so many of us why are we not making an impact on our world.  We live in a world that lives for the exact opposite of this love.  Maybe the answer is found in 1 John 2:9-11 which says, “
Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.  Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.  But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.”

Easter Is Coming

Most of us know that Easter and Christmas are two times during the calendar year of the church that people are most likely to attend church, yet did you know there are far more people who would attend if they had a simple invitation?

Thom Rainer, a Christian blogger and researcher recently polled over 300 non-churched people, and found that ninety-six percent of them are at least somewhat likely to attend church if invited! That’s an astounding statistic as the translation is that 9 out of 10 would at least consider attending if someone would take the time to invite them.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!  I am looking forward to another year of potential and possibilities!

As we enter this year with optimism about the things which lie ahead, as well as the knowledge our Lord will lead and guide us, we also realize there will be moments of great challenge as we move forward.

Christmas in Our Hearts

A cartoon from a few years ago showed a woman saying to her husband, “Good grief, Henry. Here’s Christmas at our throats again!”

Amid the preparations for Christmas each year, there always seem to be a few voices like hers, proclaiming a “Bah, humbug!” on the whole business. And if the truth be known, some of us may feel less than excited about Christmas ourselves. The expense, the crowds, the overindulgence, the hurried schedules and all the other trappings of modern Christmas celebrations are enough to make all of us take a jaundiced look at the season.

New Sunday Night Bible Study Series

Nothing stops our God.  Nothing stops His gospel.

Don’t write off the church.

Some people already have.  They say they like Jesus, but there’s no point to the church.  As far as they’re concerned, the church is a failed institution.

I disagree.
