Nobody But Jesus

At the Milan Cathedral there are three inscriptions over the respective doorways.  Over the right-hand door there is this motto: “All that pleases is but for a moment.”  Over the left-hand door the words are: “All that troubles is but for a moment.”  But over the central door there is a simple sentence: “Nothing is important that which is eternal.”   There are so many things that come up in the course of the year.  What will 2020 hold?  More floods, hurricanes, tornados, mass shootings, crippling accidents, or devasting diseases.  What troubles are ahead of us?  We can also ask, what pleasures are ahead of us in the new year?  New jobs, children, grandchildren, wealth, our favorite sports team wins it all, or we get the recognition we think we deserve.  What pleasures are ahead of us this year? But regardless of the troubles or the pleasures that are ahead of us this year they are all just for the moment.  I am reading a new book and the question was asked, “What will people remember about your life?”  For most of us it will be nothing, when our lives are over, we will fade from the memory of most people.  That is because most of us focus on the things that are not that important.  The important things are the eternal things.  As we begin the next decade and this new year in 2020 our theme for this year is “Nothing But Jesus.”  He is what is really important!  He is what saves!  He is what really matters!   Come join us this Sunday as we begin this new year and focus on the eternal things.  I hope to see you there.
