Two men were talking together. The first challenged the other, “If you are so religious, let’s hear you quote the Lord’s Prayer. I bet you $10.00 you can’t.”
The second responded, “Now I lay my down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. And If I die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.”
The first pulled out his wallet and fished out a ten dollar bill, muttering, “I didn’t think you could do it!”

VBS Prayer Vigil Guide
July 21, 2016
Begin by asking God to clear your mind of all outside distractions. Place all of you thoughts and your spirit with the adults volunteering in VBS and the children who are coming to participate in our week of VBS.
Be silent a few seconds and begin to feel His presence with you. Pray as if you are taking to your best friend. Ask Him to bless the building, the grounds, and all the things used to bring those present to an understanding of who Jesus is and the need they have for Him.

During the months of May and June, we have been talking about “The Living Christ and His Concern for the Family.” We have been talking about how we are all a part of a big family and we are all brothers and sister in Christ. On Mother’s Day we discussed how we can pass on our faith to our children. And looking around in our culture there is a great need for us to reach the children of our community.

As we get ready to begin a brand new series on Sunday’s here at First Christian Church Orangefield on prayer, I would like to share one of my favorite illustrations about prayer.
He sits by himself at a table for two. The uniformed waiter appears at his side. “Would you like to go ahead and order, sir?” The man has, after all, been waiting since seven o’clock—almost half an hour.
“No, thank you,” the man says with a smile. “I’ll wait for her a while longer. How about some more coffee?”
“Certainly, sir.”
The man sits, his deep brown eyes gazing straight through the flowered centerpiece. He fingers his napkin, allowing the sounds of light chatter, tinkling silverware, and mellow music to fill his mind. Dressed in a sport coat and tie with his dark brown hair neatly combed, he projects a clean-cut and welcoming image. You get the sense that he wants his companion to feel important, respected, loved. Yet he’s not so formal as to make one uncomfortable. Having taken every precaution to make others feel at ease with him, still, he sits alone. The waiter returns to fill the man’s coffee cup.

Aren’t there things that we absolutely love about God, but it is also so very scary? It is great to know that God is powerful and He is in absolute control of everything, but it is also scary to know that He really is in control and at any moment allow this life to be over, the end, finished!
It is also absolutely fascinating to think that God knows me. It is so comforting to serve a God who knows me but it is also so scary to know that God does know me, with all of my failures and inadequacies. And even though he knows us he still loves us and wants a relationship with us.

There are two images that come to mind when I think of Easter. You can’t have one without the other. The first image would be that of the Cross. There’s nothing like it. It’s a stark image that made the first believers shudder so much that it does not appear in Christian art for five centuries after Jesus died! But the Cross is the instrument of our salvation. It stands at the intersection of heaven and humanity. The words spoken from the Cross, the action taken by Jesus in accepting the Cross, the dreaded moment of his death, all of these together provide life, everlasting life, to all of us.

I still remember when I was in high school and teachers told me about things that were going to happen in our future. I still remember figuring out when that happens I will be 30, wow that is ancient. But as the years progress, thirty doesn’t seem ancient anymore.

This year we are going to focus on going deeper in our faith: deeper in our knowledge of God and his Word; deeper in prayer; deeper in the Holy Spirit; deeper in Christlikeness. We also want to get closer this year-to strengthen our relationships in this Body of Christ. And we want to reach wider this year-to extend the love and truth of Christ to our community and region and world.
Deeper. Closer. Wider

Another year is here, and it’s always a challenge to know what to say to each other that is new and enlightening. I know we all have some bad habits that we should get rid of. I’m sure there are also some good habits that all of us should develop as we head into 2016. So to start the year off right, let’s try to break our bad habits and develop those good ones!
